HELLO!

We Are Garrett Heights –

A premier educational community inspiring academic excellence and nurturing human potential

Perched on a hill not far from Morgan State University, Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School (GHEMS), part of the Baltimore City Public School System, has been serving the Lauraville Community of Baltimore City since its foundation in 1899. Since that time, GHEMS has focused all its efforts in creating a positive environment for its students and their families. Those efforts continue as GHEMS has been recently designed as a Community School.

As a Community School, GHEMS continues to build on its foundation of providing a phenomenal environment in which all students can flourish and achieve academic excellence, by adding much needed community resources through strategic community partnerships. This integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. We have an extraordinary learning community focused on student development and success.

The Educational Partnership

Honest, open communication forms the basis of the educational partnership among leadership, teachers, students and parents. Members of the GHEMS community believe that it is the responsibility of each individual to be respectful and caring of each other and of the world in which we live.

The Project Based Learning Model

Project Based Learning (PBL) a dynamic classroom approach which uses 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, among others, to encourage and promote learning by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.

The Prepared Environment

Each child is given the freedom and guidance to learn directly from a thoughtfully prepared environment. The responsibility to make choices instills in students’ self-discipline, independence, and joy in the learning process.

The Collaborative Learning Community

In GHEMS classrooms, students are encouraged to develop, share, and acknowledge individual strengths and skills. Learning is a collaborative process in which students inspire, motivate, teach, and, most importantly, respect each other.

The Potential of Each Individual

Students are supported and guided on an intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual level as they strive toward fulfilling their potential. By respecting a child’s unique voice, purpose, and learning style, teachers foster self-confidence and a willingness to take risks.

GHEMS CORE BELIEFS

5 Principles of Our School

Our commitment to these principals guides all that we do, bonds the entire school together in a shared mission, and transcends both time and individuals. People may come and go; time may pass; our core beliefs and values remain the same. We believe that by making these beliefs and values real in our actions, we can fulfill our mission to nurture the complete growth of every student we have the privilege to serve.
